Descriptions of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork Services

“Healing is a process, not an event.” John Barnes, PT
Therapeutic Massage Sessions are customized and may include a variety of therapeutic modalities (described below) depending upon your individual treatment needs. You may also schedule with a VLW Therapist who specializes in specific modalities.
1 hr  $65         90 minutes  $90         2 hr  $120
My back and my neck are killing me!

Where Do YOU Hurt?!

A Therapeutic Massage session is totally individualized for each client depending upon your treatment needs.  Each Massage Therapist will determine which techniques or modalities to use to deliver the bests results.  Every therapist is different and has different areas of expertise.  You may prefer to work with one therapist exclusively or a variety of therapists over time. depending upon your need at the time.

Therapeutic Massage is about accurate assessment, specific treatment and excellent results… experienced in a deeply relaxing and healing environment. The goal of Therapeutic Massage is to relieve pain and restore freedom of movement by identifying and treating the underlying cause of the problem.  This requires that Therapists have advanced training in assessment as well as treatment.  Therapeutic Massage is generally “problem oriented” and is not a full body massage.  Many of the different treatment modalities available to you are explained here.

DEEP TISSUE THERAPY – a technique used in a Therapeutic Massage
1 hr  $65         90 minutes  $90         2 hr  $120
Good Hurts Feel Great!

Good Hurts Feel Great!

Deep Tissue Massage is NOT a deep pressure full body massage. Deep Tissue Therapy is a specialized type of bodywork aimed at restoring maximum movement, flexibility, strength and relief of pain due to contracted, restricted deep musculature. Each layer is relaxed progressively in order to reach the affected layer or layers (forcing causes pain & poor results). Deep Tissue Therapy focuses on specific body areas/regions, not “full body”.  You may need to have many areas addressed if your body is chronically tense and contracted like most people with chronic life stress. To address all of the areas needed you will need to schedule a longer appointment time – a minimum of 1 1/2 to 2 hours.  Chronic muscle tension or injury typically develops adhesions (bands of painful, rigid tissue) in muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Adhesions can inhibit circulation and cause pain, limited movement, and inflammation. Deep Tissue Therapy breaks down adhesions to relieve pain and restore normal movement. Deep Tissue Therapy is performed with great sensitivity to the client’s comfort level and is deeply relaxing.

1 hr  $65         90 minutes  $90         2 hr  $120
Myofascial Release (MFR) Neck Unwinding

Myofascial Release (MFR) Neck Unwinding

Myofascial Release is an extremely effective and deeply relaxing type of treatment for all ages – infants to geriatrics. Do you feel like you’re ‘wound too tight’, ‘shrink wrapped’, or have unrelenting pain? Have you had all types of medical diagnostic testing and treatment – even failed surgeries? Or maybe you’ve tried traditional physical therapy or massage therapy without results? MFR may be the answer.Fascia is a tough connective tissue interwoven throughout the body like a three dimensional web from head to toe. If you were to tug on one part of a spider’s web the entire web would move and create a tightening or pulling effect in some areas. The same thing happens in the fascial system; therefore, when the therapist is able to facilitate a “release” in one area of the fascia the effect can be widespread. Unrestricted, it provides support and flexibility to all structures of the body. When restricted, it can wreak havoc on your body and emotions. Injury, physical or emotional traumas, chronic inflammation, stress, scar tissue and chronic postural habits from daily activities or work cause these fascial fibers to tighten down, shorten, thicken and adhere (glue together), putting abnormal pressure on nerves, muscles, blood vessels, bones, organs and the brain. Acute or chronic pain, limitation with movement, structural misalignment and degeneration, and a weakened immune system are some of the repercussions. Myofascial Release can be the blessing for which you’ve been searching!

TRIGGER POINT THERAPY a technique used in a Therapeutic Massage
1 hr  $65         90 minutes $90         2 hr  $120
Trigger Point Therapy is a specialized type of bodywork focused on an individual’s referred pain patterns and the trigger points that typically create them. Trigger Point Therapy is a gentle, non-invasive treatment that can even be used at home. Myofascial trigger points are tiny contraction knots that develop in a muscle or connective tissue when it is injured or overworked. Even though the pain you’re experiencing is in one area, the trigger point is typically in another area – hence, the ‘referred’ pain pattern. Left untreated, such trigger/tender points often lead to restricted and painful movement of entire body regions.
1 hr  $65         90 minutes  $90
CraniosacralUsing a gentle touch, Craniosacral Therapy is deeply relaxing as well as consistently beneficial in improving the functioning of the nervous system by releasing restrictions in the craniosacral system. By complementing the body’s natural healing processes, CST is increasingly used as a preventive health measure and is effective for a wide range of medical problems associated with pain and dysfunction. As the name implies Craniosacral Therapy addresses the important connection between your cranium (head) and its direct link through the spine to the sacrum (base of spine) and pelvic girdle which influences the parasympathetic nervous system (i.e. “rest and repose” – intended to undo the damaging response to stress). Our lives are inundated with constant stress which has the potential to do much damage – physically, emotionally and mentally. This sustained stress overloads the parasympathetic nervous system resulting in undue strain on your heart, lungs, pancreas, liver, kidneys, etc…. Craniosacral Therapy’s tremendous influence on the parasympathetic nervous system brings healing and balance in many unexpected ways throughout your entire body.

Thai massage is influenced by yoga asanas and emphasizes meditative rhythmic hand pressure and deep stretches. Shiatsu is based upon the principles of Chinese and Japanese meridians of energy and utilizes pressure on acupuncture points to accomplish health goals. This combination gives you the best of both traditions.

In Thai-Shiatsu Massage, you are fully clothed in loose-fitting, comfortable clothing. This massage is performed on a mat on the floor, and no oil or lotion is applied. The treatment consists of passive yoga-like stretches, with rhythmic compressions along specific “Sen” energy lines and muscles in the body. Thai-Shiatsu Massage is the perfect marriage of yoga, bodywork and energetic healing. By using body weight and leverage, correct posture and the hands, thumbs, elbows, knees, feet and forearms the massage is able to release restrictions deep within the soft tissue. Because this massage is working on the different body layers (koshas) the release works on emotional, physical and energetic levels. Thai-Shiatsu Massage feels amazing and is incredibly relaxing.

Cupping lifts tissue rather than compresses it. Breaks up adhesions and cellulite!

Cupping lifts tissue rather than compresses it. Breaks up adhesions and cellulite!

Cupping bodywork is considered one of the best deep-tissue therapies available. We’ve been providing this service for the past three years, long before it became popular in the 2016 Olympics.  (We also do the Rock Taping!)  Cupping is thought to affect tissues up to four inches deep from the external skin. This form of bodywork has been adapted from Chinese Medicine using glass or silicone cups to create a suction, or negative pressure, causing the skin and superficial muscle layer to be lightly drawn into the cup. The cups can be gently moved across the skin (often referred to as gliding cupping).  Cupping is much like the inverse of massage – rather than applying pressure to muscles, it uses gentle negative pressure to pull them upward. For most clients, this is a particularly relaxing and relieving sensation.  Cupping is used to soften tight muscles and tone attachments, loosen adhesions and lift connective tissue, bring hydration and blood flow to body tissues, move deep inflammation to the skin surface for release, and drain excess fluids and toxins by opening lymphatic pathways.  Cupping is used for a myriad of soft tissue problems, not limited to, back and neck pain, tight muscles, anxiety, fatigue, migraines, and even cellulite. (For weight loss and cellulite treatments, a structured series of treatments are required.)  Cupping also helps open up the chest and benefit the lungs and can even benefit menstrual problems and digestive problems, too.  The results are time tested and amazing.  Because negative pressure or suction therapy brings circulation and toxins to the surface of the skin, a discoloration of the skin called a “cup kiss” or “doo-hickey” can occur.  This is totally harmless and if this appears during the treatment, it’s just an added bonus indicating the release of intense stagnation (body fluids and toxins) in the area. You may associate the appearance with bruising but bruising occurs when there is an injury.  There is no injury with cup kisses.  This technique is used safely in children, adults and elderly individuals.

FACIAL CUPPING      Not currently available.
15 minutes   $20.00       facial cupping with 30 minute massage  $45      facial cupping with 60 minute massage  $75
Facial cupping is entirely painless, leaves no marks on the skin and is gentle enough to use on sensitive and couperose skin and rosacea. It is best to arrive for your treatment with long hair tied back and a clean face.  Your facial cupping session starts with a thin application of coconut oil.  After a light face and neck massage, your facial cupping treatment begins.  Small suction cups are used during facial rejuvenation cupping to create a gentle vacuum to lift the skin and other facial tissue. Lifting the facial tissue activates lymph drainage to eliminate toxins, cellular waste and excess fluid in the face and neck to reduce edema and chronic puffiness.  The muscles of the face and neck benefit greatly from the increase in circulation and the reduction of tension and tightness, releasing expression lines and loosening rigid muscle tissue.  The skin lifts and firms, lines and wrinkles will plump and scar tissue will soften.  Facial cupping can be transformative to your appearance, but facial cupping isn’t limited to skin rejuvenation.  It can provide significant therapeutic results for symptoms related to sinus infections, inflammation, edema, relaxing muscle tension and those suffering with TMJ disorders.   Please drink an ample amount of water before and after each treatment.
How Many Treatments are Recommended for Optimal Anti-Aging Results?
As with any therapeutic treatment, results can vary from person to person.  The recommended initial course of treatment is between 6 and 12 sessions. The results are cumulative, especially if treatments are performed 1-2 times per week.  We recommend monthly follow-up sessions to maintain the original results.

1 hr  $65         90 minutes  $90  (preferred treatment time)
The proper functioning of the lymphatic (immune) system is critical to your body’s ability to detoxify and regenerate tissues, filter out toxins and maintain a healthy immune system. It’s a complex system comprised primarily of lymphatic vessels and nodes that require physical movement (exercise) or massage to stimulate the functioning of the lymphatic system. When the lymph circulation stagnates, fluids and toxins accumulate and cellular functioning is significantly compromised. This opens the way to many physical ailments. The lymphatic system may be insufficient or the pathways blocked due to surgery, trauma, fatigue, on-going stress, lack of physical activity, emotional overload, cold temperatures, infections, significant swelling, age, chemicals or food additives. Lymph Drainage is an advanced but gentle therapy in which the therapist uses a range of specialized and gentle rhythmic pumping techniques to move the lymph in the direction of the natural lymphatic flow. Lymph Drainage is an extremely beneficial component in the treatment and control of lymphedema (lymphatic congestion, fluid retention and swelling).

Benefits of Lymph Drainage Therapy Include:

Cellulite reduction and weight loss
Control of and treatment for lymphedema
Improve chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia
Improve digestion and circulation
Is preventative and remedial
Minimize or reduce stretch marks
Promote detoxification of the body
Promote healing of wounds and burns, improves the appearance of old scars
Promote the healing of fractures, torn ligaments, sprains and lessens pain
Reduce stress and improve sleep
Relieve edema (swelling, fluid retention): swelling after trauma and surgery, swollen extremities, tired puffy eyes, swollen legs during pregnancy
Relieve inflammation, sinusitis, allergies, acne and other skin disorders
Strengthen the immune system

POSITIONAL RELEASE a technique used in a Therapeutic Massage, not alone
Positional Release (or strain-counterstrain) is a technique of reducing tender points in the soft tissues by passively placing the body, joint or muscle in a specific position where light digital pressure on the tender point is no longer painful (using client feedback to find that correct position). That position is then held for approximately 90 seconds allowing the sensors in the musculature and joints, known collectively as proprioceptors, to “reset”. The correct position is obvious because the pain level will drop dramatically or go away completely! After 90 seconds, the area is slowly returned to neutral and re-examined for improvement. Resetting these sensors in positional release allows the musculoskeletal system to return to a healthier state, eliminating pain and allowing joints to move back to dynamic balance.

PROPRIOCEPTIVE NEUROMUSCULAR FACILITATION (PNF) a technique used in a Therapeutic Massage, not alone
PNF was originally developed as a form of rehabilitation designed to facilitate flexibility (increase range of movement), muscular strength, and coordination (re-organize muscle tissue). In that, it is very effective. PNF currently finds a loyal following in mainstream sports and fitness arenas (used in the conditioning of athletes to increase muscular flexibility, thus muscular efficacy and prevention of injury) as well as massage therapy (to lengthen neurologically shortened muscles). PNF works with proprioceptors and involves both the stretching and contraction of the muscle being targeted using passive and active techniques.

REIKI   (pronounced Ray’ Key)       1 hr  $65         90 minutes  $90
Reiki is a type of energy work, an ancient laying-on of hands healing technique that uses Universal Life Energy to heal and balance the subtle energies within your body.  Reiki addresses physical, emotional, mental and spiritual imbalances. The intention is to create deep relaxation, to help speed healing, reduce pain, and decrease other symptoms you may be experiencing.  It is deeply relaxing, extremely effective and a wonderful complementary therapy in any healing or wellness program.  There are no contraindications or ill effects when using Reiki.Generally you’ll lie on your back, fully clothed, on a massage table, although, depending upon the need you could also be sitting.  For example this work is extremely beneficial for someone who has suffered a concussion or has headaches; we would do some of your treatment with you sitting. During a Reiki session, the practitioner places his or her hands lightly on or above different parts of your clothed body. The hands are intended to be a conduit for Universal Life Energy, balancing energy within and around the body.  A Reiki session usually lasts about an hour.  Some practitioners follow a predetermined sequence of hand placements, allowing their hands to rest on each body placement area for 2 to 5 minutes before moving on to the next. Intuitive practitioners may move their hands in a seemingly random order to the area where they feel the energy is most needed. Sometimes direct touch is not indicated so the practitioner will have their hands a few inches above your body.  You may or may not “feel” anything but clients often notice the practitioner’s hands are very warm with a deep penetrating comforting heat.
