The Inner Harmony of Healing: How Your Body Creates Calm and Joy

By: Janet Carroll, RN, NMT

Your Mood Is a Team Effort

The circulatory system isn’t the only system that lifts your mood — but it plays a major role and works together with other body systems to help you feel good, calm, and energized.

Circulatory System – The Energy & Oxygen Giver

Your circulatory system is your body’s internal highway — delivering oxygen, nutrients, and hormones to every cell while carrying away waste. When your heart rate rises during movement, massage, or deep breathing, blood flow increases, fueling your brain and muscles with oxygen and glucose.
This boost in circulation stimulates the release of endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin (in collaboration with the nervous system) — your natural “happy” and “reward” chemicals.

Massage Therapy enhances circulation by:

  • Gently stretching and compressing soft tissues, helping arteries and veins deliver oxygen more efficiently.

  • Encouraging capillary exchange, so cells receive more nutrients, and waste is removed more effectively.

  • Stimulating the vagus nerve, which promotes both relaxation and balanced blood pressure.

This improved circulation also:

  • Boosts cognitive clarity by feeding the brain’s “energy-hungry” neurons.

  • Releases endorphins and dopamine, lifting mood and motivation.

  • Regulates body temperature and vitality, helping you feel awake and alive.

Result: You feel energized, positive, and radiant — that unmistakable post-exercise glow.

Nervous System – The Mood Regulator

Your nervous system constantly balances between “fight or flight” (stress) and “rest and digest” (calm). When you move, breathe deeply, or receive therapeutic touch, your parasympathetic nervous system switches on — lowering cortisol and inviting peace and relaxation.

When neurotransmitters switch on:

  • Serotonin → mood, sleep, and calm

  • Dopamine → motivation, pleasure, and reward

  • Endorphins → pain relief and euphoria

  • GABA → relaxation and stress reduction

  • Norepinephrine → alertness and focus

Therapeutic Massage helps regulate the nervous system by calming overactive stress responses, improving vagal tone, and supporting the brain’s natural chemistry of balance and well-being.
While the nervous system makes and uses neurotransmitters, the endocrine system also plays a supporting role — since hormones can influence neurotransmitter activity (for example, cortisol can affect serotonin levels).

Result: A calmer mood, clearer thinking, and deeper sleep.

Lymphatic System – The Detox & Immunity Supporter

The lymphatic system is the body’s cleansing network — filtering waste, balancing fluids, and supporting immune defense. Unlike the circulatory system, it doesn’t have a pump; it depends on movement, muscle contraction, breath, and massage to flow.

Lymphatic Drainage Massage activates lymphatic flow by:

  • Applying gentle, rhythmic pressure to move lymph fluid toward drainage points, supporting detoxification.

  • Reducing inflammation, which helps ease fatigue, heaviness, or mental fog.

  • Boosting immune function by mobilizing lymphocytes and improving circulation of immune-supporting fluids.

  • Enhancing cellular renewal, leaving tissues oxygenated and balanced.

Also, when lymph circulates freely:

  • Toxins and cellular waste are cleared, reducing inflammation linked to fatigue and low mood.

  • Immune cells are activated, strengthening your body’s resilience.

  • Fluid balance improves, leaving tissues less puffy and more oxygenated.

Result: You feel refreshed, clear, less sluggish, and more in tune with your body’s natural rhythm.

Fascial System – The Emotional Connector

Fascia is the body’s connective web — wrapping muscles, nerves, and organs in a continuous network throughout your entire body. It holds both physical and emotional tension, responding to stress, movement, and touch. When fascia becomes tight or dehydrated, it can restrict both physical mobility and emotional flow.

This is where Myofascial Release comes in. Through slow, sustained pressure and mindful touch, fascial restrictions and adhesions begin to soften, rehydrate, and regain elasticity.

When fascia is released and hydrated:

  • Circulation and lymph flow improve, enhancing energy and detox.

  • Sensory nerves calm, helping shift the body out of “fight or flight.”

  • Stored emotional tension softens, creating space for ease, openness, and joy.

Result: You feel light, open, grounded, and balanced — movement flows with ease, emotions settle, and your whole being feels reconnected and renewed.

That’s Vital Living.
